Severed Beak

While tending to my birds, I discovered
that my ringneck dove had been in a fight
with another bird and got her beak bitten
halfway off.

Nobody was there when it happened, and
when I did notice it, the stump of the beak
had a large scab on it. I searched the cage
and found the severed piece, which we saved.

We hand fed the bird until the upper beak healed.
We then super glued the severed portion to
the existing beak and turned her loose on her
regular food.

Observing that she was having great difficulty
eating, we checked her lower beak. It had been
partially severed in the incident and was causing
her pain. Since the lower beak had died below the
injury site, we clipped the beak at that point.

We removed the portion of the upper beak that we had
glued on and hand fed her until everything healed.
In three months, there has been no appreciable growth,
but she has learned to eat with what she has.

In Memorium

It is with great sadness that I must report the loss of our male eclectus, Jade. He passed away last week after a short illness. Since the nearest avian vet is 85 miles away and we are both in poor health, We had no choice but to let him go.

Jade was the gentelist bird in the flock and the best talker. He out talked even our African Grey. Late at night, you could hear Jade talking, presumably in his sleep, running through his entire repertoire.

He will be sorely missed.

Oppose H.R. 669

Congress is considering a bill, H.R. 669, The non-native species ban.  This bill would ban any species of animal life not native to the united states, if a government bureaucrat determined that the species would harm any species or habitat in the US, if the species were let loose in the wild.  In other words, you could find your pet bird illegal to possess and subject to seizure and euthanasia

If you choose to get involved in opposing this bill, there is a website that has a range of activities.  The site’s URL is;  www.nohr669.com.  I urge all my readers to contact their congressman and tell him you oppose this legislation.  Full instructions are at the site.

Welcome

Welcome to the world of parrots.  As you can see, this is the first post.  As we progress, we will strive to make this site current, informative and original.  We will try to cover some of the things that the big sites miss or don’t care to cover.

Our readers can help us in this endeavor.  Tell us what you want or need in a comment and we’ll try our best to oblige you.

Here’s to many years of happy birding.
